Two of the biggest dieting fads of 2017 are apple cider vinegar (ACV) and paleo, but how do these two eating habits work together?

The philosophy behind the paleo diet is consuming only what the cavemen would have eaten. Although ACV is not technically paleo, it falls into a grey area. Vinegars not containing gluten or sugars (apple cider and balsamic) are acceptable for dieters, according to Paleo Magazine, and they tout many health benefits.

ACV is made by adding bacteria and yeast to juice from crushed and squeezed fruits, and it was not traditionally found in the Paleolithic diet. Other foods — like lacto-fermented vegetables, raw butter, bee pollen and magnesium supplements — were also not eaten by our ancestors, but they’ve been accepted by modern paleo eaters.

We’ve listed three things to know about the health benefits of incorporating ACV into a paleo lifestyle.

ACV PROMOTES WEIGHT LOSS

Previous research has found that drinking ACV can lower body weight, body mass index (BMI), weight circumference, and serum triglycerides (fat found in blood). Medical Daily reported that obese adults who consumed a beverage containing one or two tablespoons of vinegar every day lost two to four pounds after 12 weeks.

ACV MAKES GREAT SALAD DRESSING

Leafy greens, fruits and vegetables are all paleo-friendly salad ingredients, which is a crucial part of the diet. Many salad dressings you’d find on the grocery store shelves are full of preservatives and additives, but ACV can be embraced to make delicious, healthy toppings.

According to Paleo Leap, extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, lime juice, rice vinegar, and avocado oil are also great dressing ingredients to combine with ACV. Try adding ginger, garlic, basil, oregano, dill, black pepper, mint and mustard for additional flavor.

ACV HELPS DIGESTION

ACV isn’t classified as a probiotic, but it has many of the same qualities in how it helps with digestion, Bembu reported. Drinking a glass of water mixed with ACV 30 minutes before a meal may improve digestion. Hey, what dieter couldn’t benefit from better gut health?
