The study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine had the objective of determining whether drinking black tea over a six month period would have an effect lowering blood pressure. The study involved 95 participants between the ages of 35 and 75.

Blood pressure decreased by 2 to 3 blood pressure points for both systolic pressure and diastolic blood pressure.

At a population level, observed differences in blood pressure would be associated with a 10 percent reduction in the prevalence of hypertension and a 7 percent to 10 percen reduction the risk of heart disease and stroke, the researchers said.

The research was conducted by scientists at the University of Western Australia.
