Most men will admit that trying to figure out what women want sexually is complicated. A one-size-fits-all approach in understanding women often leaves men confused. Luckily, science has delved into the depths of the intricate female mind to explore unconventional turn-ons that sexually arouse them.

A recent Singles In America survey, conducted by Match.com, found taking the time to disconnect from the phone on a date is a turn-on. A total of 75 percent of singles find answering a phone call in the middle of a date to be a major turn-off, and 66 percent also don’t like when their date is texting. In addition, 58 percent don’t want to see their date’s phone faceup on the table during a date, and 45 percent say never seeing or hearing a phone throughout a date is a major plus.

These turn-ons and turn-offs are practical and straightforward, reflecting the modern day culture of the digital age. However, there are some surprising additional triggers that can put a woman in the mood.

A Wrinkled Eyebrow

A wrinkled, or furled eyebrow can put a woman in the mood more than a happy face. A study published in Evolution and Human Behavior found men who have facial features that display the "Dark Triad" of personality traits, such as Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy, are especially attractive to women. Psychologists explain women were more likely to see narcissism linked to social success, physical, and psychological health benefits. A woman's preference for narcissism was strongly related to their reproductive success, or birth to more offspring. The preference for the Dark Triad traits in men may be linked to a woman’s overall fertility.

Two-Week Old Beard Or Stubble

Men, put those razors down, women find an older beard, or stubble, a greater turn-on than a clean shaven face. A study in Evolution and Human Behavior found women were more attracted to men with beards, specifically those with 10-day-old stubble and full beards. Participants said the clean-shaven men looked as healthy and attractive as those with a full beard, but rated the bearded men higher for perceived parenting skills. A light beard may be perceived as too “manly,” while a full beard gives off the impression for male aggression.

A Deep, Husky Voice

The sounds of Barry White or Johnny Cash can send tingles down a woman's spine. A study in PLoS ONE found a low, husky voice is perceived to be more dominant and strongly linked to finding a partner. A tender, deep voice with a heavy breathe is deemed attractive, because it shows a man’s musculature.

The Names Ryan, James, And Jack

Changing a name could be a difficult feat to court a woman, but if your name is James, Ryan, or Jack, you’re already seen as attractive. In a study called "The Name Experiment," presented at the 2008 Edinburgh International Science Festival, women surveyed in the UK found Ryan to be the most attractive name, followed by James, and Jack. Meanwhile, the least attractive names were Peter, Thomas, and George.

We may have strong perceptions about first names, and our perceptions could have real consequences in everyday life. However, for better or for worse, we should make the most of our birth name. Peter, Thomas, and George, not all hope for romance is lost.

Good ‘n’ Plenty

The way to a woman's heart is through her sweet tooth, specifically Good 'n' Plenty Candy. A study found women were turned on by the scent of cucumber and Good 'n' Plenty Candy, while the smell of cologne, cherry, and charcoal barbeque meat was a turn-off. Surprisingly, the smell of cologne was found to reduce vaginal blood flow, which led to less sexual arousal.

Tooth-Brushing

A clean set of teeth can be a turn-on for any woman, especially if you brush with her. A 2003 case study in Seizure found a Taiwanese woman, 41, experienced orgasm once to twice a week from simply brushing her teeth, and this was followed by mild non-convulsive seizure. The researchers concluded it wasn't the smell of the tooth paste nor her gums, but moving her fist back and forth in front of her face in a tooth-brushing motion. The woman couldn’t climax from sex or masturbation.

Smell Of Gasoline

Men, turning on a woman could be as easy as a trip to the gas station. British women are turned on by the smell of leather, gasoline, paint, and printer ink, according to a study done by soap giant Daz. Men were turned on by the scent of lipstick, baby lotion or a roast dinner. Dosing yourself in noxious fumes is not advised.

Strange, but true, these turn-ons may put many woman in the mood.
