Dr. Mehmet Oz made a house call to Power 105.1's The Breakfast Club, New York’s Hip-Hop and R&B morning show. Oz, who hosted a panel during iHeartMedia’s Lifestyle Health and Wellness Expo (which we obviously attended) the day after his interview, gave DJ Envy, Angela Yee, and Charlamagne Tha God a sneak peak on his tips for living a healthful life in the winter.

Yee, who was kicking a cold, wanted to know how to go about preventing cold and flu. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu activity peaks between December and February — and while rates are currently low, the CDC expects them to ramp up as the season progresses. Oz said it's possible to stop a cold (or worse) before it starts by drinking a lot of fluids, getting enough sleep, and increasing intake of vitamin D and echinacea. Science is split on how effective the latter is, but the University of Maryland Medical Center found "several clinical trials have shown that people who take echinacea as soon as they feel sick reduce the severity of their cold and have fewer symptoms than those who do not take the herb,"

Another area of interest was holiday weight gain. Thanksgiving is around the corner, though it feels it’s already happened with Christmas decorations, songs, and music, already in full-swing. And apparently, Oz believes there’s a way to have all the holiday food you want without gaining any weight. A couple hacks: Swig a teaspoon of vinegar (apple cider or the regular kind on a salad) before heading to the dessert table; vinegar changes how you metabolize sugar. Also, munch on high-fiber crackers or foods before a meal to lessen hunger, and never, under any circumstances, double fist food and drink.

This but scrapes the surface of Oz’s in-depth conversation with 105.1. Watch the video below for his thoughts on other hot topics, including the arsenic levels in rice, penis shrinkage, cell phones and brain tumors, plus the current state of patient-doctor relationships.
