Barbie dolls — just like us!

Lammily, who is considered the realistic fashion doll, can be seen grappling with insecurities in a new ad centered on an upcoming beach vacation in Miami. She can’t seem to escape images of bikini models who claim to be “perfection” and members of the “thigh gap club.” But to her surprise, she finds she has more in common with these model dolls than she thinks.

On the beach, Lammily can see these dolls also have stickers of cellulite and stretch marks, inspiring her to take off her long-sleeved cover-ups and reveal her blue bikini. Then, she “breaks it down with her new friends” and ends her dance party with a message for those watching to “do you.”

The ad gives new life to the doll’s purpose, which is to remind young girls being average is beautiful, too.

Nickolay Lamm, a graphic designer and researcher, created the Lammily line of dolls based on typical human body proportions of a 19-year-old girl, so other young girls could develop a positive body image. When initially trying to get this project funded, he said realistic dolls would lead to “happier, stronger women, who are truly confident and proud in their own bodies.”

There's only one kind of Lammily doll available for order, but new to the site is the ability to create and download a custom passport. Consumers now have the option to name their doll and choose which country she's from.
