Midnight may soon be the McGriddle Hour. This April, McDonald’s will begin testing a new all-day breakfast menu at some locations in the San Diego area. The company has not yet divulged which sandwiches it will offer past the normal 10:30a.m. curfew, though it has revealed hash browns have already joined the ranks.

In recent years, McDonald’s has charted a new path for customer satisfaction, replacing an emphasis on product quality with one of health consciousness. However, depending on the added breakfast items, some inclusions may depart from that mission. Several of the early-morning choices deliver more calories and sodium than the restaurant’s dinner options. A Big Mac, for instance, packs 530 calories and 960 milligrams (mg) of sodium. Meanwhile, a Sausage Egg & Cheese McGriddle contains 560 calories and 1,360mg of sodium.

McDonald’s stated the decision to test all-day breakfast stemmed from their customers’ growing preference for flexibility, both in their schedules and tastes. Up until recently, however, company executives have rejected the idea of all-day breakfast because there simply isn’t enough room on the grills to accommodate both sets of menu options. The new test will determine if consumer demand can give just cause to find a solution, a McDonald’s spokesperson said, but it is still too early to speculate on any outcomes.
