Skydiving is scary enough, but try throwing a seizure into the middle of 12,000-foot jump and it just might turn into the most terrifying event of your life. Just ask Christopher Jones, who experienced just that during his free fall jump last November.

Jones told NBC News that his skydive on Nov. 14, 2014 began like any other but rapidly turned into what Jones described as “possibly the scariest moment of my life.” As Jones entered stage five of his dive, at around 9,000 feet, the otherwise textbook jump took a rapid turn for the worst. In the video, filmed by Jones’s jumpmaster, Sheldon McFarlane, we can see Jones begin to convulse as he experiences a massive seizure midair. According to McFarlane, Jones spent the next 30 seconds in free fall unconscious.

“I was trying to figure it out…” McFarlane told NBC News. “I thought he was trying to do something new … trying to do a turn or something.”

When McFarlane quickly realized that Jones was not joking around, but was actually in extreme danger, he managed to pull back Jones’s ripcord at around 4,000 feet, saving the young sky jumper's life. Jones regained consciousness again at around 3,000 feet, and thanks to the quick thinking of McFarlane was able to safely land without sustaining any injuries. Despite the international praise for his actions, according to McFarlane, he’s no hero.

“I’m just doing my job,” the jumpmaster told NBC. “Just doing what I’m trained to do.”
