10 Foods That Ruin Your Brain According To Doctors

When people talk about diet, the first thing that comes to their mind is weight loss or losing that belly fat. But what you eat affects not just your weight. The brain also enjoys healthy benefits of food.

However, just like how some foods ruin a person’s summer body, the brain can also be a victim of bad diet. There are foods that can negatively affect cognitive abilities and increase the risk of having diseases that affect memory, such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Below is a list of ten foods hat negatively impact or ruin your brain according to doctors:

Fried food is known to contain high amounts of bad fat and calories. They contribute to inflammation in the brain, which then causes memory loss and brain fog.

Fast food

Fast food has long been linked to health problems, including obesity. But such high in saturated fats meals reduces the body’s ability to fight Alzheimer’s. The presence of sodium also contributes to memory decline.

Artificial sugars

Artificial sugars mainly affects the waistline. But such product is also bad for the brain because of the link between diabetes and dementia. Packaged foods are known to contain added and artificial sugars.

Sugary drinks

Soda, energy drinks, sports drinks, juices and other drinks full of sugar provide added calories and have been associated with the development of dementia. You can try fruits for a refreshing drink and better health.

Some fish contain mercury that can negatively impact your cognitive function. The list includes tuna, king mackerel, orange roughy, swordfish, shark, tilefish, escolar and canned albacore tuna.

Foods with high sodium content

You should avoid eating foods that are high in sodium, for they may increase the risk of having dementia or Alzheimer’s. Replace sodium-packed foods with other spices or reduce use of salt when cooking at home.

Vegetable oils

Certain oils, such as sunflower, soybean and canola, contain high levels of omega-6 fatty acid, which if consumed too much could lead to brain inflammation. Try oils rich in omega-3 acid instead, like olive oil in lieu of butter and vegetable oils.

Choosing margarine over butter is not always the best option. Margarine can also affect brain health due to clumping of a protein called beta-amyloid that contributes to the development of Alzheimer’s.

Processed cheese

This includes packaged shredded cheese, sliced cheese and stringed cheese. Packaged cheese promotes the production of proteins in the body that contribute to Alzheimer’s.

Packaged meats

Packaged meats, including deli meat, hot dogs, bacon and canned meats, are made with preservatives, sugars and sodium. Such ingredients are known to damage the body and the brain.
