6-Year-Old Cystic Fibrosis Patient Survives COVID-19

Following a COVID-19 diagnosis that happened mid-March, East Montgomery Elementary School first grader Joseph Bostain continues his road to recovery this week , as per reports. In fact, the diagnosis itself is just the latest in a long list of obstacles that is already making living a challenging business for the 6-year-old.

Thankfully, he has a family behind him. Adopting him when he was about 14 months old, the family is reportedly behind him every step of the way, helping him go through his daily medical needs since he’s born with cystic fibrosis, which is a condition that imparts significant damage on his digestive system, lungs and other vital organs in his body.

In fact, according to his mother Sabrina Bostain, even prior to the COVID-19 diagnosis, he already needs a number of breathing treatments just to go through each day.

“We do an hour-long treatment twice each day, and up to four times daily when he is ill, depending on how he is feeling,” Sabrina Bostain said.

Thankfully, Bostain celebrated four days without fever earlier this week.

“He is doing so good. He’s perky and happy. He still has a mild cough and some tummy issues going on. But I think we’re about to end everything with no fever for four days. That’s a good thing,” his mother added.

However, after symptoms began appearing again, Joseph’s mother had him take a coronavirus test, which turned out to be positive.

“The cough was a different cough for Joseph. It was a combination of both a wet and dry cough.”

After being treated at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, he then went home to recover despite experiencing top coronavirus symptoms such as vomiting, cough, diarrhea, fever, a headache and even a sore throat.

In the two weeks that followed, Bostain posted regular updates on his condition, posting that he’s getting better each day.

“Thank you for all the cards and the prayers and the gifts,” the 6-year-old said at the start of one of the videos. “I’m a cystic fibrosis warrior, and I beat COVID-19.”
