Best Carbs To Eat While On Keto

Following a ketogenic diet and eventually putting your body to ketosis – a condition where fat stores are broken down to produce energy and ketones – takes a whole lot of willpower. After all, the keto diet is an eating plan that’s very high-fat, low-carb, and of course, restrictive.

And while some studies on its long-term effects are still being made, it’s easily garnered a reputation among celebrities, health experts and everyday people since one of its best known benefits is helping you lose weight. There’s also improved physical performance, lower insulin levels and better brain function.

What’s tricky, however, is what you can eat while on the keto diet. This is because it can be quite restrictive that the low-carb part of the diet may be hard for people.

So if you’re still aching for those sweet, sweet carbs but intent on following the ketogenic diet, here are some food that can give you, the best of both worlds. Oh, and call them smart carbs. Sounds better that way.

Avocados

While a lot of fruit, and we mean a lot, are off-limits in the keto diet, avocados are a fatty exception. This is because it’s filled to the brim with healthy monounsaturated fat. That, and it has three grams of fiber per ¼ fruit. And oh, it’s also delicious. Who wouldn’t want that?

Spinach

Leafy greens are very, very low in both calories and carbs, making them a great keto addition. Spinach in particular, only has 7 calories and 1 gram of carbs, all while having vitamins A and C, fiber, potassium and iron.

Tomatoes

Do tomatoes need an explanation? They’re keto-friendly, delicious and are an excellent source of lycopene, which can help lower cardiovascular disease risk.

Mushrooms

Make like Mario and go eat your mushrooms because it packs just 15 calories and just 1 gram of net carbs but has lots of dietary fiber.

Asparagus

Low in calorie and carbohydrates, asparagus are high in antixodants like vitamin E and vitamin C. They also contain three key flavonoids, all of which can help lower blood pressure and inflammation in the body.
