Bunions Causes, Symptoms And Available Treatment

Bunions are a deformity in the bones, specifically in the joint at the base of the big toe. Its technical term is hallux valgus. One of the reasons as to why bunions develop is due to the existence of a structural problem in the bones of the foot. Most of the time, when bunions occur, the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint is the most affected. When this happens, your feet are no longer lined up properly.

To paint a clearer picture, when bunions happen, the bones of the big toe is inclined toward the second toe. The usual growth should be straight ahead. Since the big toe tends to push against its neighboring toe, this will cause the joint to stick out.

As for the symptoms of bunions, these are typically noticeable in adults. Those with bunions will experience pain and soreness, a burning sensation, hardened skin under the foot, numbness and redness. There are times when adolescents may experience these symptoms as well.

Bunions typically happen because of the existence of an inherent problem with the bones of the foot. Do note that some people who have experienced bunions have never really developed any of the symptoms.

With that in mind, it is highly advisable to avoid shoes that crowd the toes. This may increase the risk of symptoms. However, bunions are not caused by this practice directly. Some of the factors that directly cause bunions include overpronation, hypermobility and other foot injuries.

1. Overpronation

Overpronation happens when there is an uneven distribution of weight to the foot and tendon resulting in an unstable toe joint. This will most likely result in bony bumps that typically form at the base of the big toe.

2. Hypermobility

Hypermobility is when the bones of the big toe move more than usual. In fact, about 10 percent of symptomatic hallux valgus deformity is actually associated with hypermobility. According to some clinicians, hypermobility leads to pronation and peroneus longus insufficiency, which leads to bunion formation.

Luckily, there are a number of home remedies for treating bunions.

1. Ice application

One of the best ways to treat bunions is the classic application of ice to the affected area. Bunions are typically caused by a form of swelling on the foot. The coolness of the ice will greatly reduce any kind of swelling.

2. Appropriate footwear

It is important that you undergo proper foot measuring so that you’ll only get suitable footwear options. Take the time to go through the footwear sizes and don’t buy something that does not fit you well. Shoes that provide you with enough space can relieve any kind of pressure on your feet.
