Can Fasting Lead To Better Skin?

A recent study by the University of Graz in Austria looked into the huge impact of intermittent fasting on promoting overall good health. It has caught the attention of doctors and dietitians, who are also contemplating the effects of fasting on the body’s largest organ, the skin.

Inflammation can lead to acne and eczema, which can be reduced by fighting bad gut bacteria. In an article for The Telegraph, Dr David Jack, a renowned aesthetic doctor based in London, said that by just regulating blood glucose levels and insulin sensitivity, damage of collagen on the skin and elastin proteins found on the dermis, which is supporting layer of the skin, can be entirely prevented.

He also advised people trying to better their skin to watch their diet while not fasting. According to him, anti-inflammatory foods and antioxidants are needed to maintain healthy looking skin. He added that a plant-based diet is best to follow when trying to ensure the skin is healthy.

Occasional fasting does spur the production of antioxidant compounds known to reduce aging and wrinkling, said another expert. However, the expert added that it is important to be getting all the other nutrients.

Intermittent fasting could have a negative impact on autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis and inflammatory conditions such as eczema, another expert advised. It could lead to deficiencies that could make the skin worse. Hence, having a complete diet with sufficient nutritional foods is necessary to nourish the body and keep the skin healthy too.

In a piece for Thrive Global, Felice Gersh, MD, founder of The Integrative Medical Group of Irvine in California, said the root cause of acne is inflammation in the body. The solution to which is improving gut health and restoring microbiome balance, which in turn will result in clearer skin. Men and women with acne tend to fall into a depression after trying all the possible treatments. But once they try out fasting, which will work as a miracle, it will be a blessing to them, she said.

She herself had tried fasting and witnessed the change to her skin firsthand in terms of skin aging as well. Clearing the skin is an added benefit of fasting as more serious health conditions, such as cardiovascular problems and diabetes, are taken care of.
