Cat Allergies Vaccine: When Will It Arrive?

Watching cat videos is one of the funniest and most relaxing things to do. But for some people, it may be the only way to have fun with cats since they are not allowed to touch or play with kitties because of their allergy.

Cat allergy is one of the common pet allergies affecting nearly 10 percent of people in the U.S. But everyone may soon have the chance to play and cuddle with these furry friends.

Swiss firm Hypocat has created a vaccine that promises to reduce the risk of being allergic to cats. The company said the product fights allergens using a new approach unlike traditional immunotherapies.

The Hypocat vaccine, described in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, is applied directly on cats instead of people to prevent allergic reactions. It works by teaching the animals’ immune system to fight the protein, called Fel d 1.

The protein is believed to be involved in nearly 90 percent cases of cat allergies, Gizmodo reported Wednesday. Hypocat said its vaccine could reduce the presence of Fel d 1 in cats.

“We are very pleased to publish this data which shows our Hypocat vaccine is able to produce high levels of antibodies in cats and that these antibodies can bind and neutralize the Fel d 1 allergen produced by the animals,” Gary Jennings, CEO of HypoPet AG, said in the statement.

The cat allergy vaccine may help prevent rashes, nasal congestion and irritated eyes and may reduce the risk of asthma or developing chronic respiratory issues, New York Post reported Wednesday

During lab experiments, the company gathered more than 50 young cats and provided three doses of the vaccine for nine weeks. The approach appeared effective in all animal subjects that provided them high antibody levels and an immune response to the allergen.

The cats also produced less Fel d 1 in their saliva and tears. Hypocat then tested the vaccine with blood samples from people with cat allergy. The vaccine was effective in reducing allergic reactions.

Hypocat also noted the approach did not cause serious or long-term side effects in cats. The company is in talks with drug regulators in the U.S. and Europe to conduct clinical trials involving people and to bring the product to market.
