Costco Requiring All Customers To Wear Masks Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

Costco plans to reopen with most businesses planning to do the same but on the premise of certain guidelines. That would include similar guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) such as wearing face masks. Costco plans to reopen stores starting May 4.

"To protect our members and employees, effective May 4, all Costco members and guests must wear a mask or face covering that covers the mouth and nose at all times while at Costco," the announcement read.

However, Costco mentioned that this policy will exclude children aged 2 years and below and people who have a medical condition that prevents them from wearing a face mask. This comes not long after the company announced that it was mandatory to wear face masks in select stores. With more shops opening soon, the same directive will be carried out.

Other than that, Costco revealed shopping hours for people aged 60 and above. Shopping hours were increased to five days a week from the previous three. Elderly folks will be allowed to do their shopping from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. from Monday to Friday starting May 4. Regular shopping hours will also be implemented on the same day.

The plans of Costco aligns with the decision of most businesses to restart their operations despite health experts expressing that it may be too soon. As reported on the Business Insider, the recommendation is to see states show a steady decline for 14 days. So far, no state has rendered such, raising concerns on the well-being of employees and customers.

It should be noted that Costco warehouses in the United States will be implementing a two-person limit per membership card to enter the premises. Also, warehouses located in El Paso, Texas, and Puerto Rico are excluded from the policy.

And while the policy was meant to safeguard both employees and incoming customers, some have taken exception in wearing a mask. “Won’t be renewing my membership!,” one Twitter post read. “I will not comply with your mask rule!” another tweeted.

There are also other guidelines from Costco in its planned reopening. That includes priority access to member health care workers and first responders. Also, they cautioned that there will be some products placed under control to ensure that other members can avail of the items they need. Reusable shopping bags are also allowed for as long as the members themselves will be the ones to do the packing, USA Today reported.
