Virginia Coronavirus Outbreak Update: More Cases Reported Ahead Of Reopening

The number of COVID-19 cases in Virginia continues to rise with the latest tally reportedly at 26,746. This includes confirmed lab tests, although the increase in numbers is lower compared to Sunday but higher from Monday to Tuesday. The revelation comes a day before the planned reopening on May 15.

The rise in COVID-19 cases is seen due to more testing now being performed in the state. For May, the overall level of cases has shown drops from previous numbers of over 1,000 since the start of the month. The trend appears to show a fall in cases, indicating that the curve of COVID-19 cases is now on the decline, reported.

The declining numbers show positive signs considering the number of possibly infected people in the state would rise with more testing being done. Govern Ralph Northam and his administration are stressing that tests have to be made for them to continue with the "Forward Virginia" plan as plans to gradually reopen on May 15 nears. Phase 1 of the reopening will allow several nonessential businesses to open but with placed guidelines and restrictions to prevent any surge of new COVID-19 cases.

As of this writing, Virginia has been holding up well and meeting the benchmark of steady PPE supplies and hospital capacity running for about two weeks now. There are 4,546 hospital beds available and no Virginia hospitals have reported any supply problems.

Testing has also increased from 2,000 to between 3,000 and 5,000 since the previous week. The goal is to perform 10,000 tests daily, according to Gov. Northam. With more tests showing positive results dropping, the figures are considered a major factor in the plans for the state.

Though Phase 1 of the plans to gradually reopen is set on May 15, the commonwealth will continue to be under a series of public health orders and executive orders to slow the spread of the coronavirus. The state of Virginia will remain under a state of emergency until June 10.

For people who want to keep track of the numbers over in Virginia, the Virginia Department of Health COVID-19 website provides an update on the latest statewide numbers daily between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. As of May 13, there are reports of 25,431 confirmed and 1,315 probable cases of COVID-19 across the commonwealth.
