Dog Saliva Causes Woman To Lose Arms, Legs

After a bacteria entered her system, a woman from Ohio reportedly had to undergo through multiple amputations and may even need to undergo more surgeries. Following the amputations, Marie Trainer was surprised to find out the bacteria that caused all of this came from her dog’s saliva, per a family report released earlier this week.

“[The doctors] described it as just the perfect storm . Somehow the dog saliva entered her system and caused this case of events,” Gina Premier, Trainer’s step-daughter, said in an interview.

According to the family, Trainer first started feeling ill back in May after coming back from a Punta Cana trip. Initially, she thought it was nothing but a common flu. However, her condition started worsening in less than 12 hours, upon which her family decided to take her to the emergency room.

Per the doctors, Trainer’s liver and kidney were already failing at that point, although they were stil not sure what’s behind it. This pushed Trainer’s husband to bring her to a different hospital with a much higher level of care.

She was then brought to Aultman Hospital in Canton, Ohio, where Premier actually worked as a nurse practitioner. The doctors there decided to place her in a medically-induced coma that lasted for about 10 days.

“We didn’t know if she was going to live or die because we didn’t know what was causing this,” Premier said after finding out that her step-mother would need amputations to survive. “We didn’t know what it was but the bacteria that was causing this was causing her limbs to die.”

Afterwards, it was then revealed that Trainer suffered from capnocytophaga, which is a blood infection that’s usually caused by the saliva of dogs and cats. Besides saliva, it can also be transferred via scratches, bites or even just close contact with an infected animal.

Positive outlook

So far, Trainer already went through eight surgeries. However, she may be requiring more. Despite this, Trainer is fully awake and has a positive outlook on things and excited to get out of the hospital as soon as possible.
