The main drawback of having overwhelming emotions is being unable to function well. Organizing stuff and taking care of the mess that’s within your arm’s reach will result to you feeling accomplished. This will also help you focus on things that you want to do next.

Another tip is to avoid multitasking. There’s a reason why Harvard Business Review’s Peter Bregman considers multitasking dangerous. This is best explained by citing the risk of getting into an accident when one uses a phone while driving. The human brain can only take so much. Many people get overwhelmed because they try to do so many things at once. To remedy this, one should focus on doing a singular thing at a time.

Practicing the 5-4-3-2-1 technique can also help you manage your overwhelming feelings amid these troubling times. This mindfulness technique does not require tools and all you need to use are your five senses. You can do this technique by following the steps below:

5 - Look around and name the first five things you can see.

4 - Listen and name four different sounds you can hear.

3 - Use your sense of touch and name three things you can feel with your hands and feet.

2 - Use your nose and identify two distinct smells.

1 - Name one thing you can taste with your mouth.

This technique will help you realize the importance of the present moment. It will also help your mind focus and ignore unwanted thoughts.
