Facebook Preventive Health: What To Know About This New Feature

Facebook has unveiled a new feature designed to guide netizens in improving and maintaining good health. The new “Preventive Health” tool helps people connect to healthcare providers and track their checkups.

The social media giant worked with health organizations to build the new feature, including the American Cancer Society, the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also supported the project.

Facebook said Preventive Health should encourage netizens to get regular checkups. The feature can help locate affordable clinics and schedule tests.

The initial launch of the tool will focus on guiding people who are at risk or already diagnosed with heart disease and cancer, the two leading causes of death in the U.S. It will also provide information about flu and facilities that administer vaccine, TechCrunch reported Tuesday

“Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women around the world and in many cases it is 100 percent preventable,” Richard Kovacs, president of the American College of Cardiology, said in a statement. “By incorporating prevention reminders into platforms people are accessing every day, we’re giving people the tools they need to be proactive about their heart health.”

How Facebook Preventive Health Works

To access the tool, users simply search Preventive Health in the mobile app. The tool will provide healthcare recommendations provided by the CDC and partner organizations, which will be based on age and gender.

Facebook Preventive Health can also save scheduled checkups and track progress. There is also an option to directly connect to resources for tests and other health-related concerns.

However, Facebook noted it will not collect the results of any test. This is because of user privacy policies.

“Health is particularly personal, so we took privacy and safety into account from the beginning,” the company said in a press release. “Personal information about your activity in Preventive Health is not shared with third parties, such as health organizations or insurance companies, so it can’t be used for purposes like insurance eligibility.”

In addition, the information provided to Preventive Health will not be used for social media ads.
