Reduce Fatty Liver By Combining Exercise, Green Tea Extract

When fat builds up in the liver, the condition known as fatty liver disease becomes inevitable. Fortunately, researchers have found a good combination to counter this health issue.

A recent study has found that a good counter against fatty liver disease would be a combination of green tea extract and exercise. They came up with this idea after observing the effects of the combo in mice that were fed a high-fat diet.

While it is normal for the liver to contain some fat, the buildup of extra fat in the liver cells brought about by consumption of excessive calories could be life-threatening. According to the American Liver Foundation, an estimated 100 million people in the U.S. have fatty liver disease.

People who are overweight or obese have the higher risk of developing fatty liver disease. People with diabetes are also prone to having it. Those who have poor eating habits and experience rapid weight loss are also at risk.

The study seemingly offers a ray of hope for people who already have fatty liver since the researchers were able to document that green tea extract and exercise reduced the severity of the condition in mice by 75 percent.

For their study, the researchers compared two groups of mice. The first one served as control while the other group was given green tea extract and made to exercise regularly by running on a wheel after being fed a high-fat diet for 16 weeks. They found that the latter had less fat in their livers compared to the former.

Apart from examining the fat present in the livers of the mice, the researchers also studied and compared the feces of the two groups. Based on their analysis, the feces of the mice that consumed green tea extract and exercised regularly had higher lipid and protein levels.

Although the findings of the study seem promising for people with fatty liver disease, more research needs to be done first before the combination of green tea extract and exercise could be widely recommended in the medical community as a counter for the condition.
