GERD Diet: What You Should And Shouldn’t Be Eating

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) affects nearly 20 percent of all people in the U.S. This digestive disorder can cause heartburn, sore throat and problems swallowing.  

Aside from the physical discomfort, another problem with GERD is that many people find it difficult to get a safe and effective treatment. That is because of the potential side effects of drugs available for such disorder. 

GERD occurs because of low levels of stomach acid. It allows bacterial overgrowth, gut infections and an increase in the pressure inside the abdomen, which affect how the body processes carbohydrates.

People commonly take proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) to treat GERD. These acid-blocking drugs are known for side effects, such as increased risk of heart attacks, stroke, gut infections, bone fractures and even death. 

But there are other ways to help reduce the effects of GERD without relying on the potentially harmful drugs. There are foods that have been proven effective to treat the disorder’s symptoms and other negative effects.

Eating more starchy plants and fruits could help in lowering your carb intake. You can add more berries, such as raspberries, blueberries and strawberries, which all provide low amounts of carbs, along with peaches, tomatoes and cantaloupe. 

Lotus root, butternut squash and acorn squash are also good choices for additional low-carb starchy plants into your daily diet. The top foods under GERD diet are nutrient-dense, whole foods, bone broth, yogurt, kefir and other fermented foods with probiotic effects.

Keto GERD Diet

Being on keto also leads to lower carbs. This approach focuses on using ketones to burn fat for energy instead of glucose. The keto GERD diet could limit carbs to only 5 to 10 percent of your daily calories. 

Foods to Avoid Under GERD Diet

Meanwhile, there are also foods that you should limit to avoid or treat GERD. Eliminate artificial sweeteners, highly processed foods and alcohol, which may cause bacterial overgrowth and worsen gut health. 

You should also avoid drinking water with meals. It could negatively affect the stomach acid, digestion and nutrient absorption.
