Health Benefits Of Staying Hydrated Amid Coronavirus Lockdown

As the COVID-19 coronavirus continues its lethal spread around the world, it is important to keep ourselves healthy and active every day to ensure that our risk of getting infected is reduced. Along with a healthy diet and regular exercise, one way to do it is by getting hydrated regularly with water and other, equally healthy fluids such as infused water and unsweetened tea. This is important since, according to the World Food Programme, our bodies contain about 75 percent water. It is also because many of us are now observing home/community lockdown orders, we might feel less active staying within the confines of our homes, which can result in dehydrated skin, illnesses and other unwanted health issues over time.

Proper daily hydration is not guaranteed to protect you from the virus, but it is still important for your overall health and well-being in the long run. With all else said, here are the health benefits of staying hydrated amid the coronavirus lockdown:

Avoid Dehydration 

Dehydration can negatively affect cardiovascular health, kidney function, electrolyte balance and other bodily functions. The key to avoiding it is an obvious one: hydration. Proper hydration requires not only the right liquids to take, but also how much you need to maintain appropriate balance in your body. Although the required amounts vary based on the person's age or size, it is good to aim for at least eight 8-ounce cups daily. For children, 5 to 6 cups per day might be needed, and more than 10 cups daily in the case of teenagers.

Avoid Getting Sick

Aside from keeping you hydrated all day, drinking enough fluids can also help boost your immune system. Staying hydrated is extremely important even if you are already sick from the virus. Make sure that you sip on fluids throughout the whole day, especially if you are suffering from gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea or nausea. Gastrointestinal symptoms are some of the leading causes of dehydration among children.

Maintain Skin Health 

Dehydration can cause your skin to be less elastic, thus causing it to become dry and rough. Although studies do not yet confirm this, there are anecdotal reports of many having improved skin through adequate hydration.

Prevent Constipation 

Adequate hydration also is key to staying up and running, most especially among children. Children often complain about constipation most likely because they are not drinking enough fluids throughout the day. Although fiber and food choices can reduce your likelihood of getting constipated, it also counts to drink enough water daily.

Keeps You Cool

Staying hydrated literally keeps you cool since it helps regulate your body temperature. This is especially important when you are exercising every day because dehydration can cause you to get tired in the middle of a workout, putting a stop to your (home) exercise session sooner than you have planned.
