Himalayan Salt Lamp: Does It Really Have Health Benefits?

Authentic chunks of solid salt are sourced from the mines in the western boundary of the magnificent  Himalayas, located in Khewra, Pakistan. Either pink or pinkish orange, it gives out light and heat intermittently.

Apart from having a therapeutic and calming effect on the surroundings, there are other health benefits backed by anecdotal evidence, while empirical research remains insufficient. The major health beliefs of authenic Himalayan salt lamps fall in the following categories according to an article published by Dr Axe:

Air Purifier

The most common use of Himalayan salt lamps is to stop indoor air pollution by placing it in a corner of the room. Salt present in the lamps naturally draw water molecules and create water vapor during the process. Sometimes water vapor can hold allergens and bacteria that are considered indoor air pollutants, and get trapped in the salt, thus removing the pollutants. The cycle is repeated several times as the lamp is heated, triggering vapor that enclose the pollutants and cleans the air.

Negates Radiation

Electromagnetic radiation emits invisible positive ions that cause fatigue and eventually affect immunity. Negative ions neutralize the effects of radiation and stop it from affecting the body. Himalayan salt lamps are one such natural source found in nature that helps combat harmful electrosmog easily.

Asthma and Allergy Therapy

Clinical studies over the years have proven the effect of salt therapy on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a condition known to block air from entering and leaving the lungs. Studies claim 85 percent of mild and moderate asthma cases and 75 percent of severe asthma cases have been relieved with the help of salt therapy. The Himalayan salt lamps are an effective option for people with asthma.

Improves Mental Health

The glow of the Himalayan salt lamps transmit a soothing effect to the surroundings and the people around it. The negative ions released similar to the ions in waterfalls enter the bloodstream and increase the level of serotonin in the brain, a chemical needed to overcome depression and sleep better.

Since it is the purest form of salt available today, it is rich in calcium, magnesium, copper and iron. When the salt is ingested into the system, it gets absorbed into the cells and normalizes metabolic functions. This also improves energy flow and blood circulation.

Beware of Fakes

It is important to beware of fake products and imitations of Himalayan salt lamps. Good thing, it is fairly easy to identify them. If the salt lamps are not affected by precipitation in the air, may be coming from cooking or showering, it is mostly likely a fake salt lamp.

A durable salt lamp is also fake because it is fragile in its natural state. The light is not very bright, for it comes and goes inconsistently and provides little illumination. Another good indication is color. Some salt lamps available on the market are not pink in color. There are genuine white Himalayan salt lamps, but they tend to pricier because of the rarity of their color. White salt lamps that are being sold at very low prices are obviously fake.
