How To Keep Brain Healthy And Sharp As You Age

As we get older, it’s inevitable for our bodies and organs to start aging and slowing down, no matter how healthy we are. It’s a natural part of life, and our brains are no exception to that. In fact, in a lot of cases, our brains are usually the ones to start losing their prime functions as we age, especially if we don’t take care of it.

As an organ, our brains constantly grow along with us, increasing in weight from the time of our birth through our young adulthood. However, once it reaches maximum weight, it then starts to cycle backwards, losing weight as we get even older. This loss affects its functions, making it more vulnerable.

Thankfully, there are easy ways you can do to maintain your brain health for as long as you can. Here’s how:

  1. Improve your nutrition – Are we even surprised at this point? The science is clear, and improving your diet is essential to make sure your brain stays healthy. For maximum brain health, opt for a lot of vegetables and fruits.
  2. Choose whole grains – Our brain can be picky, and it prefers to use glucose molecule for energy. Thankfully, you can easily give it that by eating whole grains. So stack up on whole grains, and don’t let your brain starve.
  3. Sleep-wake cycle – Since the brain is a circadian organ, it thrives on rhythm. For us, that means keeping up with sleep-wake cycle, giving it time to function and giving it time to rest.
  4. Manage that stress – When left unchecked, stress can lead to neuroinflammation in our brains, so make sure you manage that. You can do this via recreational activities, or by simple meditation.
  5. Keep sweating – You saw this coming. We’ve mentioned eating healthy earlier, and of course that means you also pair it up with exercise. Moving and sweating is not just for our bodies, it’s also for our brain too.
  6. Keep learning – This is quite easy, so keep learning because it helps keep your brain active and performing. It’s also fun and rewarding.
