Lazy Keto: Does It Guarantee Weight Loss?

The lazy keto is a very-low-carb ketogenic diet and it is believed to afford similar benefits as the standard ketogenic diet. The former is a less strict program since it only requires you to focus on the carb intake and less of the other restrictions. But is there a guarantee that the lazy keto diet could also yield weight loss?

What Is Lazy Keto?

This is a deviation from the traditionally high-fat ketogenic diet. At first, the diet was used as treatment for epilepsy during the 1920s. According to a study published in the US National Library of Medicine, since then, the diet has gone mainstream due to its weight loss benefits.

The traditional method involves closely tracking your macronutrient intake and comply with a very low-carb, high-fat meal pattern that allows moderate amounts of protein. The program forces the body into entering ketosis, which is a metabolic state where fat is burnd instead of carbohydrates to serve as the primary source of energy.

On the contrary, the lazy keto focuses only on the carbohydrate restriction at five to 10 percent of your daily calories. It does not, however, require you to track your protein, fat and calorie intake.

Weight Loss

The standard keto diet is famous for its weight loss benefits. Although not unique to the keto diet, the reduction of calorie intake and the weight loss benefits were found to be long term. Meanwhile, the lazy keto may not have a calorie restriction but it suppresses your food cravings, making it easier for you to lose weight without the urge of eating more. However, unlike the traditional diet, the lazy keto requires further research to prove that it leads to ketosis like its stricter version.

The downside of following the lazy keto is the higher risk of not reaching ketosis. Its primary goal is to reach that metabolic state, but there is no guarantee that practitioners could achieve this as opposed to those who are following the stricter ketogenic diet.

As per Healthline, reaching ketosis does not only require the carbohydrate restriction. One should also prioritize protein intake. The body needs to convert protein into glucose through a process called gluconeogenesis. If you eat too much protein while following the lazy keto diet, your body may generate too much glucose and prevent ketosis altogether.
