Nausea: Best Teas To Drink When You Have The Urge To Vomit

Nausea is described as a stomach discomfort that makes you feel like you are going to throw up. It is an unpleasant sensation traveling from the chest, upper abdomen or back of the throat.

A digestive condition, pregnancy, a virus or an unpleasant odor are what commonly trigger nausea. However, the medical community has yet to fully understand why it strikes.

Fortunately, there are ways that have already been proven effective to relieve nausea. One is sipping on a hot cup of tea for stomach discomfort.

Ginger Tea

A review of nine studies showed that ginger could help relieve nausea and vomiting caused by morning sickness, chemotherapy, certain medications and surgery. Another research backed earlier findings suggesting that people who undergo chemotherapy could treat nausea by taking 0.5 to 1 gram of ginger extract, according to Healthline

Honey Lemon Tea

People commonly enjoy honey lemon tea because of its refreshing citrus flavor. But studies also found that the scent of lemon alone can also help relieve nausea.

In an experiment with 100 pregnant women, smelling lemon essential oil helped reduce nausea and vomiting in majority of participants. The added honey balances out lemon’s acidic tang and fights bacteria that could also contribute to nausea.

Fennel Tea

This aromatic herb has long been used as a natural remedy for various conditions, such as stomach pain, diarrhea and constipation. But one study found that fennel tea could also help women avoid nausea before menstruation.

Another study suggested that drinking 1 cup or 240 ml of fennel tea per day could help improve digestive health, gut recovery and bowel regularity after surgery.

Chamomile Tea

Researchers previously found in a study with 105 women that taking chamomile extract is more effective than ginger at reducing nausea and vomiting caused by pregnancy. A separate study showed that women undergoing chemotherapy reduced the frequency of vomiting by taking 500 mg of chamomile extract twice daily for four months. 

Licorice Tea

Licorice is known as a traditional medicine for digestive distress. Research showed that drinking at least 75 mg of licorice extract twice a day could reduce symptoms of indigestion, such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and bloating.
