Probiotics Tip: This Is The Best Time To Take Supplements

Probiotics are necessary to keep the gut healthy, where the majority of illnesses are believed to originate from. The bacteria in the region can be disturbed by illnesses, antibiotic usage, drinking, smoking, not getting enough sleep, lack of sufficient exercise and stressful events.

Probiotics are technically live bacteria and yeast that are taken through food or supplements to balance the bad bacteria with good bacteria in the digestive tract. It is used to treat various diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, diarrhea caused by bacteria, skin conditions, urinary and vaginal health, allergies and oral health.

Supplementing probiotics can be done through the various products it is manufactured in, be it either in capsule forms, beads, tablets or drops. These forms have more of a chance to not get dissolved by the stomach acids compared to other liquid forms of probiotic supplements. This matters because probiotics have to survive the digestive acids and stomach enzymes before settling down in the large intestine.

The three types of bacteria that are strong enough to fight the stomach acids and grow despite their resistance are Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Enterococci  But when do they work at optimal speed? The answer is not clear cut.

When Do The Supplements Work Best?

Different manufacturers provide different set of rules on the label in order to help the probiotic supplement work immediately. Depending on which one is taken, it can be recommended to be consumed before or after meals. There is no correct time to do this, according to a 30 days long study.

Just as consistency matters with other medication, probiotics work best if taken at the same time everyday, for as long as suggested by the doctor. Sticking to a regular routine of taking the supplement at a particular time with commitment and consistency will help more.

There is no means to measure the success of a probiotic, though some believe that Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium have more survival capacity if consumed 30 minutes prior to eating food. Another study said that probiotic supplements that complement a meal consisting of oatmeal or low fats had better chances of surviving the forces in the stomach. Especially in comparison to water and apple juice.

However, what is known for sure and vouched for by medical practitioners is that probiotic restores the health of the gut microbiome, notwithstanding the timing of consuming the pill. For best results, one billion live cultures are to be present in the reputable brand chosen and stored according to the instructions given on the label.
