Psoriasis, Eczema Cure Could Be On The Horizon

A new study found an important protein that may help develop a treatment for two skin conditions affecting millions of people around the world. It offers the medical community a way to manage psoriasis and eczema through their root cause.

In the U.S., estimates showed that more than 8 million people have psoriasis while 31.6 million of the country’s population have some form of eczema. These inflammatory skin conditions occur due to various triggers such as allergies, cold weather and even stress, according to mindbodygreen

However, experts have yet to fully understand what really causes psoriasis and eczema on people. The latest study by researchers at the Black Family Stem Cell Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai suggests the protein HDAC3 potentially plays an important role in the development of the two conditions.

HDAC3 appeared to be helping in the formation of the skin barrier. A strong skin barrier has long been associated with lower chances of having inflammation.

In tests with mice, researchers found that those without the protein had problems in developing a functional barrier, which could increase their risk of having skin diseases.

The skin barrier mainly helps prevent water loss and blocks irritants that could enter the dermis. Problems with its functions may cause dehydrated skin and increase the risk or effects of inflammatory conditions, according to mindbodygreen.

"While HDAC3 has been studied in diverse contexts, its role and transcriptional partners in the developing epidermis had not been identified until now," Katherine Szigety, study first author and an M.D./Ph.D. student, said in a statement

The researchers now plan to see how the beneficial protein could help expand their understanding of the inflammatory skin conditions. The initial findings came from tests with mice and future efforts may focus on observing the presence and effects of HDAC3 on people with eczema and psoriasis.

Patients currently rely on avoiding or limiting known triggers to manage eczema and psoriasis. Finding the root cause of the two skin problems is expected to help the medical community develop much earlier interventions, more targeted remedies and potentially a long-term treatment.
