American Girl has been praised for the conscientious effort it makes to offer dolls that girls from all walks of life can identify with, including dolls with hearing aids, wheelchairs, and even dolls without hair for children battling cancer. However, when then 11-year-old Anja Busse noticed the doll company was forgetting children like her who have been diagnosed with diabetes, she decided to start a Change.org petition that American Doll would pay attention to... and they did.

Starting on Jan. 1, 2016, children will be able to go on American Doll’s website or walk into one of its 21 store locations and purchase a diabetes care kit for $24. The company is also set to release a set of doll arm crutches on the same date. Anja, who is 13-years-old today, took time to thank all 4,335 supporters who signed her petition.

“American Girl just released a diabetes care kit which includes an insulin pump, glucose meter, lancing device, insulin pen, glucose tablets, medical alert bracelet, insulin pump skin stickers, diabetes log book, and bag,” Anja wrote on her petition. “It is currently available for purchase at American Girl stores and will be available for purchase online starting in January. Thank you so much to everyone who signed our petition!!!!!”

Anja started her petition about two years ago in Jan. 2014 - three months after she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. She wrote in her initial post that being diagnosed “turned her life upside-down.” She went on to say that having a doll just like her and every other child with diabetes would help with feeling accepted.

“American Girl has a long history of creating items that speak to diversity and inclusion, and the diabetic care kit is yet another way we are expanding in this important area,” said American Girl spokeswoman Stephanie Spanos in an email.
