One Ontario mom is on the receiving end of widespread criticism after posting a photo of herself sitting on Santa’s lap while breastfeeding her son. Forty-year-old Rebecca Dunbar was waiting in line to get her and her baby’s photo taken with Santa at Niagara Square mall in Canada when she said her son started to get fussy.

“Honestly, we were just in line and my little guy, who has the patience of nothing, decided he was hungry in about 2 seconds,” she told Global News. “He would have just screamed the entire time so I started nursing him. And we were next in line.”

When it was her turn to snap the photo, her friend suggested she should breastfeed her baby while sitting on Santa’s lap. She got permission from both Santa and the photographer, and proceeded to sit on his lap. Santa even decided to play along with the unique situation by putting on a shocked face for the photo.

Once she had the image, Dunbar wrote, “All I want for Christmas is a happy, healthy baby” over it, and shared it on her Facebook page. As responses to the image started pouring in, it became apparent they were mostly negative, as friends found the post offensive and unnecessary.

Despite various efforts from activist groups and mothers alike to normalize breastfeeding in public, many still view it as distasteful and avoidable. Dunbar thinks her actions shouldn’t have warranted a comment either way. “I think breastfeeding is absolutely beautiful and I was very positive about it,” she said. “The fact that people have been so negative is a little upsetting. But everyone has an opinion.”
