The people of Hernanado, Fla., rallied to raise money for Kelly Johanneson, 36, when they found out she was dying from stage 4 breast cancer — or at least that’s what they thought.

According to the NY Daily News, Johanneson has been accused and charged with organized fraud after being caught for faking terminal cancer. While the exact amount of money she received is currently unknown, the Daily News reported a GoFundMe campaign raised more than $4,400 in addition to the hundreds of donations the Citrus Country Airboat Alliance, who personally knew a lot of people fighting cancer, collected. The Citrus County Sherriff’s Office first became suspicious of Kelly after receiving a complaint the money she received wasn't for her alleged medical bills.

Eventually, detectives questioned the doctors Johanneson claimed to be seeing at the Moffitt Cancer Center, but no one could vouch for her.

"This is the first case in Citrus County of its kind," Det. John Bergen wrote in a Facebook message to announce Johanneson's arrest. "It just seems so implausible that someone would use a horrible illness like cancer for personal gain. Johanneson hurt so many people, from people that loved her to people that hardly knew her but wanted to help. ... It really is unbelievable."

Johanneson had been missing for a month when all of a sudden she reappeared with a shaved head, saying she’d been diagnosed with terminal breast cancer.
