Jason Larke was 4,000 miles away on business when his wife Alison went into labor. But thanks to Samsung technology, Jason was not only able to watch his son’s birth in real time, but also make a bit of history along the way by experiencing the world’s first live-streamed virtual reality childbirth.

This first-of-its-kind birth experience took place on Feb. 20, 2015, using the Samsung Gear VR headset. As reported by Forbes, although Jason was across the continent at the time his wife went into labor, the headset allowed Jason to feel “almost as if he were in the room” for the birth of his third child, Steele.

“For me it was like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders,” Alison explained, as reported by Forbes, “knowing Jace would not be missing out on such a precious moment in our lives and we would virtually be experiencing the birth together. It has been an absolutely amazing, once in a lifetime experience that has changed our lives forever.”

The headset, which costs $200, lets you see the world beyond your peripheral vision. Although the headset is designed for movies and games, Alison and Jason’s story is one familiar to many families throughout the globe and helps to add a personal touch to technology’s capabilities.

“Being a father myself,” Samsung Chief Marketing Officer Arno Lenior told Forbes, “I know how incredible the birth of a child is. Alison and Jason’s story is familiar to millions of Australians and the reality of being away from family and friends is a heart-wrenching experience that most of us understand. But through the power of the Gear VR technology we could help Jason welcome his third son into the world in an exciting, unique way. This is what technology is all about: enabling human experiences.”
