Salmon Oil Promotes Brain Development, Other Health Benefits

Salmon oil is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), that are known to reduce heart disease, improve brain health and reduce inflammation, among others.

Brain Development

Though there needs to be research on the impact of omega-3 fatty acids in salmon oil on human brain health, test-tube studies and mice-based studies have proven the benefits. The healthy polyunsaturated fats are needed for brain development in young children and for adults throughout their lifespan. 

DHA can help repair and enhance neural cell development. DHA is also proven to be useful in bringing down the risk and aiding treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzeihmer’s and Parkinson’s disease. 

Anti-Inflammation

Studies have proven that taking omega-3 fatty acids in salmon can reduce symptoms of inflammation and related diseases like arthritis and heart disease. It can reduce the impact of inflammatory chemicals produced by the immune system and suppress the inflammatory response, as well. This is important since chronic diseases such as heart trouble and diabetes occur as a result of inflammation. 

Improves Blood Flow

Nitric acid is a compound produced by the body to make nitric oxide. It is needed to improve blood flow and reduce blood pressure. A study conducted on 21 people, some of whom were given omega-3 fatty acid supplements, proved this. 

It showed that the people who took the supplements had improved blood flow and circulation during the course of exercising much more than people who took a different oil supplement.

Lowers Cholesterol

Research has indicated that salmon oil can lower triglycerides and raise good cholesterol levels. One study conducted on 92 men with high cholesterol levels showed that the group that ate salmon for eight continuous weeks had better heart health and less unhealthy fats in the blood. 

Fetal Development

Salmon oil plays a positive role in fetal development if consumed by the mother during pregnancy. The children of these mothers who took omega-3 supplements regularly during their pregnancy had better cognitive abilities and scored high on motor skill development tests, based on a study.

The children also exhibited lower risk of developing psychological and behavioral  problems in their early childhood. Also, consuming salmon oil supplements could possibly be useful in preventing preterm births.
