In the last few years, the ketogenic (or keto) diet has gained a name in the health industry for its well-known weight loss benefits, which it achieves through the process of ketosis. Low-carb and high-fat in nature, the keto diet has been shown to help reduce weight in various studies, as well as reduce blood sugar and insulin levels.

With that in mind, however, a new study reveals a supposed previously-unknown benefit of the keto diet: a positive effect on our gut health.

Published in the May 20 issue of the journal Cell, the small study (which was made in the course of two months) showed that the diet can significantly alter the microbes in our gut, suggesting that it can help us from within as well, in addition to the fact that people follow it in order to tone up and lose some weight. Furthermore, the study also suggests that this positive effect on our gut health can also help strengthen our immune system and even reduce inflammation.

"There has been a lot of work on ketogenic diets. But we didn't know much about how these diets differ from other high-fat diets, how exactly they impact microbes, or whether or not these diet-induced changes to gut microbes matter," study author Peter Turnbaugh, an associate professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of California, San Francisco, said.

And although the study itself is fairly small compared to other health studies, the researchers believe that their findings could mean that it’s possible to target ketones and alter our gut in the process. However, the researchers also believe that more study needs to be done.

"Ketone bodies can directly affect gut bacteria even in the absence of the full diet," Turnbaugh said.

Despite this, the diet itself remains controversial at best since many health experts have cautioned against it.
