Taking Supplements While Intermittent Fasting: Yea Or Nay?

Many people have been trying an intermittent fasting plan in an effort to lose weight. It requires skipping meals for a certain time of the day to burn fats and having a controlled consumption to generate energy and avoid sudden weight gain. 

Intermittent fasting offers a number of health benefits aside from helping people shed fats. This diet approach supports cellular repair, slows down aging, promotes heart health and reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes.

When people fast, the process called autophagy occurs in the body, which tells the cells to get rid of built-up waste. Gut bacteria also becomes active and produce the protein known as fasting-induced adipose factor (FIAF) that triggers fat burning process, according to Bulletproof.

But in every diet, people lose certain nutrients and minerals. Following either a low-carb diet, a fiber-rich approach or high-protein diet restricts you from eating certain foods that are good sources of essential nutrients. 

To avoid deficiencies people add dietary supplements to their daily routine to help meet their body’s nutritional demand. However, it may be complicated for those who follow intermittent fasting. 

You can lose the health benefits of fasting when you consume any kind of food. But can supplements do the same when taken during fasting periods? The answer is yes and no. 

There are different types of vitamins that are recommended to be taken either with an empty stomach or during a meal. The effects of supplements on fasting depend on what you take. 

Curcumin and krill oil are two of the common supplements you have to take during your eating window. The body absorbs them better when taken with food. 

Fat-soluble vitamins require filling your stomach with food before intake. They include Vitamins A, D and K and Omega Krill Complex. 

To those taking the amino acid L-tyrosine, this supplement is safe to be taken on an empty stomach. However, L-glutamine and branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) while fasting may cause a problem.

These supplements are known to increase insulin levels, which may block some health benefits of intermittent fasting. If you wish to continue taking supplements or medications while fasting, it is important that you consult a doctor to understand how the combination may affect your body. 

Some prescription drugs are also required to be taken within specific timeframes. Intake on an empty stomach may not only ruin your fasting process but also the health benefits of the medications.
