Tuna Diet For Weight Loss: Does It Work?

The tuna diet is based on accomplishing weight loss goals within a short span of time. It is seen as a method to stop making unhealthy food choices. Some experts dismiss this diet plan introduced by bodybuilder Dave Draper as just another crash diet without scientific evidence to back its approach. 

The plan that needs to be followed in the tuna diet lasts for three days, during which only water and tuna can be consumed. After this phase ends, you can slowly introduce low-fat, low-carb and high protein foods into your diet for as long as you please. However, there is a strict ratio of nutrients that needs to be followed after the three-day fast, which includes 30 percent fat and carbs and 40 percent protein. 

What Exactly Is The Tuna Diet?

Draper’s version is less flexible and sticks to this regiment without much change allowed. His plan says that the tuna must be cooked without oil, mayonnaise and spices. The tuna has to be proportional to 1.5 grams of protein according to one pound of body weight.

Two liters of water can be downed every day while following the diet. Before going to sleep, take the Metamucil supplement for fiber every night. Also, consume vitamins and mineral tablets along with that so as to avoid any nutrient deficiency. 

After three days, you can consume low-fat diary, chicken, non-starchy vegetables and fruits. This post-tuna diet can be followed up to a duration according to each individual’s personal weight loss goals. The pattern can be repeated by doing the tuna fast as many times as needed to instigate rapid weight loss. 

For some of the diet plans available online, coffee and tea without sugar, eggs and starchy vegetables grains are also allowed in the post-tuna diet phase. How you finally choose to follow the diet is on you. 

Positives

When not consumed in excess, tuna is a healthy source of low-calorie protein, which contains a good amount of omega-3 fatty acids. Fish also contains the micronutrient called selenium that has antioxidant properties and also aids thyroid function. 

However, the negatives outweigh the positives since an extreme amount of calories are immediately restricted. 

Negatives

Rapid weight loss harms the metabolism and slows it down instead of speeding it up. Fasting for extended periods of time is known to reduce the calories burned during the resting phases. Restricting calories might stimulate severe hunger pangs once the diet ends and it is unsustainable in the long run.
