Fraternal twins, which are babies developed from separate eggs and are fertilized on their own a.k.a. they don’t look alike, make for about 3 out of every 100 births in the United States, reports BabyCenter.com. Identical twins, which are babies that develop from one zygote and split to form two embryos are still extremely rare, coming in at 3 to 5 out of every 1,000 births in the United States. However, the birth of twins has been steadily on the rise, for several reasons (women waiting longer to have children and women utilizing new science to get pregnant are a few of the factors involved in the increase).
