Urinary tract infection (UTI) affects the urinary system that helps remove wastes and extra water from the body. The condition may develop on the kidneys, ureters, bladder or urethra. 

People contract UTI when bacteria enters the urinary tract and spreads. In some cases, the infection travels to the kidneys and cause more health problems. 

The most common symptoms of UTI are frequent need to urinate, a burning sensation when urinating and discomfort in the lower abdomen. You may also release a foul-smelling, pink or reddish urine.

UTI affects more women than men. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) explained that women have a higher risk because of their shorter urethra, which gives bacteria easier and faster access to the bladder. 

A 2013 study suggested that women have eight times higher chances of having UTI than men. But gender is not the only factor that may increase your risk of contracting the infection.

Having too much sexual intercourse can increase your risk of UTI. Such activity exposes the body to bacteria and allow it to travel from the anus and genitals into the urinary tract.

Urinating after sex may help clear out the bladder.

Doctors commonly recommend taking antibiotics to treat UTI. However, the medication is known for causing side effects. 

But there are natural remedies for the infection. 

To relieve discomfort and prevent UTI in the future, reduce your sugar intake since this common ingredient is inflammatory and can make infections worse. 

Add probiotics or fermented foods to your diet instead. They could provide good bacteria that can block the bad ones, which could trigger UTI. 

These healthy foods include organic whole milk yogurt, sauerkraut, apple cider vinegar and kombucha. In addition, drink more water to help remove toxins from the body.
