The vegetarian and ketogenic diets are two of the most popular diet plans that people follow today, making both the subject of numerous researches and studies to analyze their health benefits.

But can you mix both?

The ketogenic diet after all, is a low-carb diet that contains a number of animal products like poultry, fish and even meat, while the vegetarian diet is strictly fruits and vegetables. Here’s how to get the best of both worlds.

The Vegetarian Keto Diet

Because it’s a low-carb diet, going on a keto diet usually means that you have to get 70 percent of your daily calories from fat, which may come from dairy, meat, fish or oil. Following the vegetarian keto diet however, takes away all of that, and instead relies on healthy fats to make up for it. This may come from avocados, nuts, seeds, coconut oil and eggs.

What to Eat

A healthy vegetarian keto diet should contain healthy fats, non-starchy vegetables, nuts, seeds, herbs and seasonings, low-carb fruits, protein and full-fat dairy products.

At the moment, no research exists on the health benefits of the vegetarian keto diet. However, many are made for both as individual diets, and here are some of them:

  1. Protects against chronic diseases – Perhaps one of the biggest pros is the reduced link to numerous chronic conditions, as well as their common factors, such as cholesterol, blood pressure and BMI. Some studies suggest they can also help with brain health.
  2. Promotes weight loss – Both diets are linked to weight loss, which is probably the biggest reason for dieting in the first place, thanks to several studies.
  3. Supports blood sugar control – Per several studies, both diets are known to help support our blood sugar and keep them at healthy levels.

It’s not without its share of downsides however. For one thing, the vegetarian keto diet can be extremely restrictive, which means that not everyone can follow it and keep it consistent. It’s also not suitable for both children and pregnant women. Lastly, transitioning into ketosis may provide some side effects, usually called the keto flu.
