Walnut Oil Benefits That Will Surprise You

Walnuts are referred to as brain food for its internal structure, and its nutrients are good for the brain, especially vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, protein, antioxidants and vitamin A. The fruit originally comes from Central Asia and the Mediterranean region but today the oil extracted by pressing whole walnuts is manufactured commercially in U.S., India, China and Iran, among other countries.

The oil is sold in either cold-pressed or refined forms. The former, though not cheap, is loaded with the original nutrients contained in the walnut fruit, with polyphenols intact. On the other hand, the refined version is lacking these nutrients, and is used for ornamental purposes. Research has so far studied walnuts more, not the oil itself.

Below are some of the health benefits of walnut oil.

Lowers Cholesterol

Though more research is required, walnuts contain antioxidant compounds, which are also in the cold pressed oil. This is evidenced by one study with 60 adults who consumed a capsule with 3 grams of walnut oil for 45 days that lowered the participants' triglycerides level.

Maintains Blood Sugar

Lowering blood sugar levels is crucial to keep type 2 diabetes at bay, which can eventually lead to stroke, kidney damage, poor eye health and heart disease. Walnut oil could help prevent some of these negative consequences and control blood sugar related to type 2 diabetes.

Maintains Blood Pressure

Walnuts brings down blood pressure due to containing polyphenols, ALA and LA compounds. The oil has the same content, hence the similar benefit.

Anti-Cancer Properties

Walnuts have a compound called urolithins that maintain normal levels of prostate-specific antigens, which could lead to cancer if not controlled. Colorectal and breast cancer risk was reduced by walnut consumption, as per certain observational and animal studies.

Reduces Psoriasis

Rashes and itchy skin caused by internal inflammation can be soothed by applying walnut oil on the region directly. It can also be added to water while bathing for the same effect.

Cures Inflammation

Inflammatory diseases such as asthma, eczema and arthritis can be reduced and dealt with by application on the troublesome area. The fiber content in walnuts prevents inflammation and discomfort of the digestive tract.
