As per a recent release, the drug lorcaserin (Belviq, Belviq XR) has reportedly been withdrawn by its manufacturing pharmaceutical company Eisai after a warning from the FDA stated that there's a possibility that the drug could increase a person’s risk of cancer.

Medicine Withdrawal

As per the FDA, Belviq wasn’t apparently able to pass a recent health trial, with the agency going on to request the drug’s withdrawal shortly after passing that warning. In addition, the FDA also stated that because of this, there’s a possibility that anyone who’s using the drug may have a higher possibility of developing cancer down the line.

Per an updated statement that the FDA released, officials from the agency noted that when they initially “approved lorcaserin in 2012, [they] required the drug manufacturer to conduct a clinical trial to evaluate the risk of cardiovascular problems.”

However, a failed safety trial is enough for the FDA to classify the drug as unsafe, immediately requesting its withdrawal from the market before it can potentially harm people who only wanted to lose weight.

“A range of cancer types was reported, with several different types of cancers occurring more frequently in the lorcaserin group, including pancreatic, colorectal, and lung,” the FDA stated. Furthermore, the FDA also advised people to dispose of the drug (safely of course) if they are already taking it. The best way to do this is to simply hand them at an official drug take back location.

However, if the person can’t access a drug take back location or isn’t near one, they can still dispose of the drug by mixing the tablets with an unappealing substance (like dirt), sealing this mix into either a box or a bag, and then safely throwing the sealed mix into the trash can.

As for experts and health care professionals, FDA warned them to simply stop recommending the drug. They also advised them to immediately contact anyone they know who uses the drug due to their recommendation.

The pill is just one of the many options people take today whenever they need some help with losing weight.
