Western Diet Can Impair Brain Function, Study Finds

There are many different types of diet in the world today, all promising a speedy weight loss with the additional benefit of improving our overall health as well. And while a lot of them are unsustainable (or worse, unproven), a lot of them seem to work most of the time.

With that in mind, a new study revealed that consuming a certain type of Western diet for as little as a week can easily impair our brain function and even encourage healthy people to overeat.

Harmful Western Diet

According to the researchers who conducted the study, a mere seven days of a high-fat, high-added sugar diet made their volunteers score lower on memory tests. Not only that, the volunteers also found junk food to be much more desirable after just finishing a proper meal.

Per the study's findings, this is because the diet itself makes it harder for people to control and regulate their appetite.  It also points to disruption in the hippocampus, which is an important region in the brain.

“After a week on a western-style diet, palatable food such as snacks and chocolate becomes more desirable when you are full. This will make it harder to resist, leading you to eat more, which in turn generates more damage to the hippocampus and a vicious cycle of overeating,” Richard Stevenson, a professor of psychology at Macquarie University in Sydney, said.

“Demonstrating that processed foods can lead to subtle cognitive impairments that affect appetite and serve to promote overeating in otherwise healthy young people should be a worrying finding for everyone,” Stevenson added.

According to him, the study's findings revealed that while the Western diet itself oftentimes only leads to fairly subtle cognitive impairments, the undermining of our appetite would lead to more problems down the road, which can be more serious. It could also lead to obesity as well as diabetes, both of which are serious conditions.

In the end, the researchers suggested people should find a healthier alternative such as a diet that is more nutritious and healthier like the Mediterranean diet, which is voted as the top diet by health experts.
