Why Diabetic People Should Add Pistachios To Their Diet

Are you one of the many Americans who suffer from diabetes? If so, then your health might benefit from adding pistachios to your diet.

Why Diabetic People Need To Eat Pistachios For Their Health

As one of the most common diseases not just in the U.S., but also in most parts of the world, diabetes affects millions of Americans on an annual level. The disease can be quite deadly if not taken care of, oftentimes leading to other health conditions such as poor eyesight, stroke, nerve damage, kidney damage and even amputation, among others.

Thankfully, there are many ways to avoid diabetes, as well as many health choices that one can make to improve their condition if they already have it. One such health choice is to eat a more nutritious diet in order to help regulate their blood sugar levels.

However, just because a food is healthy doesn’t mean that it’s good for diabetes. There are some fruits and vegetables that a diabetic must avoid since it can be dangerous for them. When it comes to food that diabetics can include in a diet, however, dried fruits and nuts are some of their best choices, particularly pistachios.

One of the best reasons that pistachios are good for diabetics is because the snack has a low glycemic index, which means that eating them wouldn’t spike blood sugar levels. As such, eating a handful before a proper meal can help regulate the body’s response to the meal you will eat. Furthermore, pistachios can also help contribute to heart health by helping control your blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Per a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, pistachios can also help reduce the vascular response to stress common in type 2 diabetes. The same study also showed that eating a mere two servings of the food can help lower the body’s response to stress, as well as improve overall heart function. It also showed that diabetic people who regularly eat pistachios also have blood veins that remain more relaxed and open.
