Why We Sometimes Feel Hungry Even After Eating A Meal

Do you feel like it is impossible to satisfy your hunger regardless of how much you eat? Do you have the unstoppable urge to snack every hour? Don’t just blame your poor self-discipline for this unhealthy need that’s adding to your weight and potentially ruining your health. 

While hunger is a normal way for your body to communicate to you that it needs nourishment, this constant signaling is an indication of something much larger. There are numerous dietary factors, such as stress-related issues, hormonal imbalances and lifestyle choices, that could be triggering hunger often.

Here are a few specific reasons contributing to your insatiable appetite:

Less Protein And Fiber, More Carbs And Fat

Meals with more protein could lead to feeling full more easily than meals with lesser carbohydrates and fat. It does not matter that the calorie count and quantity might be almost the same. 

Eating fiber slows down the rate of digestion. Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), cholecystokinin (CCK) and peptide YY (PYY) are the hormones released to suppress hunger pangs. When food is processed by the lower digestive tract, then the aforementioned hormones are released to enable hunger-suppression. 

Little Volume

Depending on the amount of food consumed, the stomach expands and contracts accordingly. The body’s stretch receptors pick up on how much the stomach has expanded and signals fullness to the brain, however, this feeling does not last for very long. 

Eat food that is high in volume but without many calories to stay full. Stretch receptors provide only temporary feelings of fullness, but the high quantity of protein and fiber consumed tends to release hunger-suppressing hormones. 

Hormonal Imbalance

For obese people, leptin hormone levels increase in the blood but is still not recognized by the brain.This is why people tend to be more hungry even after they have eaten enough and despite fat cells producing leptin. The condition is referred to as leptin resistance. 

Side Effect Of Medication

A common side effect of certain medication is increasing hunger pangs. Antipsychotics, antidepressants, corticosteroids and mood stabilizers have this effect on people who take them regularly. Birth control pills, although more research is needed on them, could be a reason for hunger persisting post meals. Certain diabetes medication such as insulin, insulin secretagogues and thiazolidinediones are said to have the same side effect.
