A Houston family’s baby monitor, which included a camera, was apparently hacked by a man making lewd comments and even calling their two-year-old daughter by her name. Lauren and Marc Gilbert’s daughter, Allyson, is deaf and never heard the lewd remarks, but now the family is wondering about how safe their home is after the horrifying incident.

“It’s quite possible that this had been going on more than one day,” said Marc Gilbert. “Security vulnerabilities exist.”

According to ABC News, the incident occurred on August 10 while the parents were cleaning up after Marc’s birthday dinner. They heard strange noises coming from their daughter’s room while she was sleeping and immediately went to investigate the situation. When they got to the room, they heard a male voice with a foreign accent calling her a moron and telling her “wake up you little slut.”

When the camera in the room turned away from the sleeping baby and onto her parents, the voice began calling Gilbert and his wife names, too. That’s when Gilbert disconnected the device and tried to figure out what was happening.

The device was connected to the Internet, so someone could have stolen the family’s password and somehow accessed the monitor.

"The router was password protected and the firewall was enabled,” said Gilbert. “The IP camera was also password protected."

Now, though Gilbert feels uneasy about his family’s safety following the event, he says that he is never hooking up the monitor again and will do whatever he can to protect his family.

“I don't think it ever will be connected again,” he said. “As a father, I'm supposed to protect her against people like this. So it's a little embarrassing to say the least but it's not going to happen again.”
