The birth of Joseph Alan Alexander-Thompson may be a story his mother will want to wait on sharing until he’s at a certain age. Expectant mother Kristen Thompson was loading up her car with groceries at a local supermarket in Flint, Mich., when a would-be robber thought he had found the perfect target. At nine months pregnant, Thompson appeared to be someone who would not put up a struggle over her purse. Mark Newton, 30, would quickly learn that was not a correct assumption.

"The guy that was standing outside Krogers said that he was walking around Krogers looking at people, so I'm guessing he thought I was an easy target. I was putting the groceries inside the car and he just came out of nowhere and snatched my purse," Thompson told ABC12. "My purse is my life. It has everything and anything that you can need, possible. Comes down to bills, the kids' insurance cards.”

After chasing down and confronting Newton, the heartless thug pushed the pregnant mother of two to the ground before resuming his escape. Luckily, when Thompson turned the corner to pursue her attacker, she spotted a group of friends in the middle of a pickup basketball game and shouted for help. Thompson’s friends not only retrieved her purse, but also subdued Newton until the Flint Police Department arrived on the scene.

Soon after police escorted Newton to jail, Thompson said she began to have contractions. Following five hours of labor, Thompson delivered her third child via an emergency C section. "His name is Joseph Alan Alexander-Thompson. He weighs 7 pounds, 7 ounces," Thompson said. "He's the cutest thing in the world. He's such a ham. In the hospital, all the nurses loved him 'cause he was the cutest baby on the floor."

While Thompson and her family welcomed their newest addition, Newton was arrested and arraigned on one count of armed robbery. He is currently being held on $8,000 bond before his preliminary trial scheduled for next Wednesday. "I asked him, I was like, 'Out of everybody in that parking lot, you're going to pick on me? Why would you do that?' He had nothing to say," Thompson added.
