Aspiring to be an artist is a hard thing. There are many technical aspects to art that are complex and require practice. Through cultural history, an artist was one who maintained a somewhat hermetic discipline of the subject. The old adage “Practice makes perfect,” applies here. But what do you when you don’t have anything to practice on?

Tattoo Art Magazine has created a “skin book,” which has been created for aspiring tattoo artists. This book has synthetic skin for its pages, giving tattoo artists a way to practice and create a portfolio for themselves. Doing so would allow these artists to get better at their craft, which is something that tattoo consumers desire more so than even tattoo artists do.

When tattoo artists have to practice their craft, it isn’t like doing it on a canvas or block of cement and then throwing it away upon error. As soon as a design is ruined on skin, it is permanently ruined. That is why tattoo artists have to begin practicing with things like fruit, or anyone who is willing to be used as a guinea pig.

"I only practiced on oranges and stuff like that, maybe twice. Then, I grabbed a friend," one tattoo artist says in the video.

To encourage precision on real skin, for that matter, the sketchbook will feature pages with images of body parts. That way, artists can create tattoos that give people a sense of pride, never regret.
