If you haven’t stopped in to your local Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts to try out one of their holiday themed drinks than you’re missing out. For those of us who have broadened our coffee/latte horizons, we tend to accept the extra shot of sugar found in most holiday drinks. According to this BuzzFeed video, a little extra sugar is not the only unhealthy aspect of a sugar cookie latte we have to worry about. As BuzzFeed explains, “Sorry in advance…”

Let’s start off with Starbucks’s ever popular line up of holiday latte recipes. A Grande Chestnut Praline Latte equals out to the same amount of sugar as 15 Hershey Kisses while a Grande Peppermint Mocha is the equivalent of 21 Hershey Kisses (13.5 teaspoons of sugar). Drinking a Grande Gingerbread Latte hits you with the same amount of sugar as eating 10 ½ Jolly Ranchers and a Grande Eggnog Latte contains the same amount of saturated fat as 2 ½ glazed donuts or 60 percent of your daily saturated fat.

Time to find out what Dunkin Donuts is hiding in their signature coffee cups. DD’s Medium Sugar Cookie Latte has the same amount of saturated fat as one chocolate glazed donut. Their Medium Iced Peppermint Mocha Latte will fill you up with the same amount of calories as 1 ½ McDonald’s Hamburgers and a Medium Snickerdoodle Latte has the same amount of sugar as over two Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bars.

If you are trying to bring a little holiday cheer to your latte while remaining healthy, ask for “skinny” or no-sugar-added versions of your favorite holiday drink or order the smallest size.
