Corey Maison’s transition from male to female has had its fair share of bumps in the road — from being bullied so much at school that the 14-year-old’s mother was forced to pull her out, to people taking out their cell phones to snap a picture of her. In spite of all that, Corey has managed to keep her head held high and strike a pose at anyone looking to take a picture. Her positive attitude was rewarded last week when her mother, Erica, got the call that her daughter’s estrogen prescription was ready for pickup.

“We were both crying and shaking,” Erica told BuzzFeed. “She literally took my breath away, as she has never given me a hug like that before. I have never felt so much love from her than that moment. It was a mixture of pure joy and relief from us both. This was it, this was the most pivotal turning point in her life, and we both knew it.”

Corey and her mother started this journey two and half years ago when she received a puberty-suppressing implant from the gender clinic at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. Then back in August, doctors from Lurie and the family’s therapist decided that Corey was ready to start hormone therapy. Luckily for us, Erica decided to surprise Corey this past Thursday and capture it all on camera. Well, capture enough of it before the feels got to her.

“Today after waiting 2 1/2 years she FINALLY got her estrogen,” Erica said the video description. “I picked it up while she was in school, so she had no idea. We have been waiting months for the readiness letter to be finalized and sent to Chicago, so had no idea on a timeline of when it would actually happen. Sorry I had to stop recording because we were both blubbering sobbing fools LOL. September 24th is a day I will remember for the rest of my life!”
