A potentially heart-breaking story of identical twin girls with hearing loss in California will now end happily, thanks to the graceful charity of the nonprofit HearAid Foundation.

As reported by ABC 7, 6-month-olds Kayla and Kiara Hernandez were the unfortunate recipients of a hearing disability that was diagnosed during a routine hearing exam.

"It was so hard for us because I questioned, 'Have they ever heard me say that I love them?’” their mother, Gemila Hernandez, told ABC 7.

With the help of hearing aids, the twin girls would have been able to avoid the developmental and learning delays that might otherwise plague them as they grew up, especially the sooner they were outfitted with them.

But assistive technologies such as hearing aids are rarely covered under private insurance plans, being considered an elective procedure. And for the Hernandez family, the out of pocket cost of $12,000 was simply too much for them to afford.

Coming across their plight, the HearAid Foundation, a nonprofit organization in Orange Country, CA, decided to step in and offer their help. The foundation, founded in 2009, has prided itself on raising funds — and awareness — for financially disadvantaged individuals to obtain the hearing assistance they deserve.

It’s an absolutely vital mission. As the organization notes, over 30,000 people in Orange County alone live with some degree of hearing loss, and the eventual bill of not providing a single hearing-impaired child assistance can total over $1 million.

This past Wednesday, the Hernandez twins were fitted for their hearing aids. "They will be able to hear all those sounds...so many blessings and beautiful things this world has to offer to them," Gemila said.

The family hopes that their story can highlight the good that the HearAid Foundation does. "Support them and learn about them. See how they're impacting the community because if I could only tell you how they've helped us," said Gemila.

The Foundation not only accepts cash donations, but also hearing aids and other assistive technologies that are in good condition.
