A pilar cyst is a common cyst that forms under the skin, occurring in 5 to 10 percent of the population. They occur mostly on the scalp and are usually benign. Though benign means they aren’t cancerous, if you looked at this woman’s cyst, you’d say it looked anything but.

Desiree, who appeared on The Doctors daytime television show to explain her cyst and get it removed, says she has had that bump on her head for more than 20 years. She says it started developing after she hit her noggin and a marble-shaped lump formed. Over the years, that bump grew and eventually became the size on an egg. She frequently covers it with her hair, asking her husband whether or not it is visible. It’s been around so long that she even named it Arthur.

According to The Doctors host Dr. Sandra Lee, the cyst looked non-life threatening; she said they sometimes run in families. Lee then proceeded to remove the cyst in a surgery performed in front of her live studio audience. In the video above, you’ll see Dr. Lee make an incision directly into the cyst and gently squeeze out the 20 year’s worth of “cheesy-looking” skin, much to the shock and horror of the studio audience. Afterward, Desiree says goodbye to the cyst, declaring that she feels lighter.

Desiree said she waited so long to get the cyst removed because “it was easy to conceal until the last year, when it ballooned and got super big.”
